'Sinners' becomes 2025’s second-highest grossing film

This milestone makes Sinners the second-highest grossing film of the year in North America, overtaking Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World.
Warner Bros.’ horror-thriller Sinners has officially crossed the $200 million (Sh25.9 billion) mark at the domestic box office, cementing its status as one of the biggest cinematic hits of 2025.
Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, the film added $6.5 million (Sh840.7 million) on Friday alone, bringing its total haul to just under $200 million (Sh25.9 billion) — a threshold it is now expected to pass during the Mother’s Day weekend.
This milestone makes Sinners the second-highest-grossing film of the year in North America, overtaking Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World.
The only film ahead of it is A Minecraft Movie, which continues to dominate with over $400 million (Sh51.7 billion) in domestic earnings.
Despite stiff competition from Marvel's Thunderbolts, which opened strong and continues to perform well in its second weekend, Sinners has shown remarkable staying power.
The film’s dark narrative, gripping performances, and strong word of mouth have contributed to its sustained box office momentum.
Internationally, Sinners is nearing the $250 million (Sh32.3 billion) mark, adding to Warner Bros.' strong rebound after a sluggish start to the year.
Earlier in 2025, Warner Bros. suffered a setback with the underwhelming performance of Mickey 17, which contributed to an 18% dip in quarterly revenue.
However, the twin successes of Sinners and A Minecraft Movie have revitalized the studio’s box office fortunes.
As summer blockbuster season heats up, Sinners stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of original storytelling in a market saturated with franchise fare, proving that bold, auteur-driven films can still hold their own.
